Centre for Education and Research in EnvironmentalStrategies (CERES) - Wetlands Development Project

Project Background

Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies (CERES) is an award winning, not-for-profit, sustainability centre located on 4.5 hectares on the Merri Creek inEast Brunswick, Melbourne. The CERES property currently has a small dam on site, which forms a critical component of the water and biodiversity education practicals undertaken by the CERES education team.  The dam also plays a role in treating stormwater runoff from theLee Street catchment.

Project Overview

Recently the water level of the dam at CERES has been dropping significantly, likely caused by deterioration of the existing clay liner at the base of the dam. Sustaining stable water levels is important in supporting biodiversity in the site and surrounding area.AECOM is working with CERES on the design and installation of a constructed wetland to improve the amenity of the existing dam, stop leakage, improve water quality and broaden the educational values of the ecological asset.

Project Outcomes and Benefits

The success of this project will provide;

  • improved opportunities for flourishing biodiversity (local flora/fauna),
  • improved educational amenity for visiting school groups and general park visitors
  • increased water reuse and treatment of stormwater, and
  • improved safety for dam access at the public site.

Project Update

The project will shortly be completed.
